Pourquoi le sport motorisé?
Dans certaines familles, le sport automobile est une tradition, mais dans la nôtre, nous étions plutôt bénévoles au bord des circuits. Mon aventure dans le sport automobile a commencé en 1991, à l'âge de neuf ans, sur la grille de départ avec ma mère, Marie Jeanne Bouchard, mon oncle Raymond et ma tante Carole. J'ai rapidement été recruté par Claude Giroux comme runner (le job idéal pour occuper un enfant de 10 ou 11 ans). Après quelques week-ends, pour m'occuper pendant les essais, on m'a également assigné au chronométrage pour faire des tapes. Vers 1995, ma mère est devenue organisatrice et j'ai eu l'opportunité de travailler comme assistant Pace Car, conduite par son conjoint de l'époque. Deux ans plus tard, j'ai continué à suivre les traces de ma mère et j'ai commencé à travailler avec le groupe départ, alors sous la direction de Jean-Guy Courcelles. Malheureusement, M. Courcelles est décédé avant même de pouvoir assister à mon premier départ de course. J'ai néanmoins continué avec l'équipe d'origine jusqu'en 2006 environ.
En 2007, j'ai commencé la photographie comme passe-temps avant de m'y consacrer sérieusement l'année suivante. 2008 a donc été une année d'apprentissage avec PhotoSportQuebec, Zone-Photo et Montréal Racing. L'année suivante, en 2009, Jennifer et moi avons commencé à travailler au Calabogie Motorsports Park. Nous y avons passé trois étés complets, ce qui m'a permis d'être publié dans l'Ottawa Citizen (l'article est resté disponible sur leur site web pendant une dizaine d'années), Inside Motorcycle, Moto Journal et sur les sites web Auto123, Moto123, OnRoule.ca. De retour au Québec, j'ai principalement couvert les journées de lapping moto à l'ICAR, de 2012 à 2015 inclusivement. De 2008 à 2016, j'ai également eu l'occasion de couvrir plusieurs événements majeurs, principalement au Québec, mais aussi un peu en Ontario : CSBK, DMCC, GP3R, Grand Prix de Valcourt, Super Motocross et NASCAR à Montréal. Fin 2016, j'ai repris du service comme préposé départ pour quelques événements, en remplacement, avant de prendre définitivement ma retraite en 2019. Durant cette même période, j'ai également eu l'opportunité d'oppéré mon towing (mon emploi principale) à l'Autodrome St-Eustache pour les deux dernières saisons de stock-car avant la fermeture du circuit, soit les saisons 2018 et 2019. Après la fermeture de l'Autodrome, je me suis complètement éloigné des circuits, n'y ayant pas remis les pieds pendant cinq ans.
Après dix ans d'absence en tant que photographe, je ferai mon retour sur les circuits du Québec et de l'Ontario avec un équipement entièrement renouvelé.
Why motorsports?
In some families, motorsports are a tradition, but in ours, we were mostly volunteers at the trackside. My motorsports adventure began in 1991, at the age of nine, on the starting grid with my mother, Marie Jeanne Bouchard, my uncle Raymond, and my aunt Carole. I was quickly recruited by Claude Giroux as a runner (the perfect job to keep a 10- or 11-year-old busy). After a few weekends, to keep me occupied during practice, I was also given timing duties. Around 1995, my mother became an organizer, and I had the opportunity to work as a Pace Car assistant, driven by her then-partner. Two years later, I continued to follow in my mother's footsteps and started working with the starting group, then under the direction of Jean-Guy Courcelles. Unfortunately, Mr. Courcelles passed away before I could even witness my first race start. Nevertheless, I continued with the original team until around 2006.
In 2007, I started photography as a hobby before dedicating myself to it seriously the following year. 2008 was therefore a year of learning with PhotoSportQuebec, Zone-Photo, and Montréal Racing. The following year, in 2009, Jennifer and I started working at Calabogie Motorsports Park. We spent three full summers there, which allowed me to be published in the Ottawa Citizen (the article remained available on their website for about ten years), Inside Motorcycle, Moto Journal, and on the websites Auto123, Moto123, and OnRoule.ca. Back in Quebec, I mainly covered motorcycle track days at ICAR, from 2012 to 2015 inclusive. From 2008 to 2016, I also had the opportunity to cover several major events, primarily in Quebec, but also a little in Ontario: CSBK, DMCC, GP3R, Grand Prix de Valcourt, Super Motocross, and NASCAR in Montreal. At the end of 2016, I returned to work as a starter for a few events, filling in for others, before retiring permanently in 2019. During that same period, I also had the opportunity to operate my tow truck (my main job) at Autodrome St-Eustache for the last two stock car seasons before the track closed, namely the 2018 and 2019 seasons. After the Autodrome closed, I completely distanced myself from the racing scene, not setting foot on one for five years.
After a ten-year absence as a photographer, I will be returning to the tracks of Quebec and Ontario with completely new equipment.
